MaryAnn Bin-Sallik held both a Masters (1986) degree in Educational Administration and a Doctorate (1989) in Education from Harvard University, USA, she was also the first Indigenous graduate in general nursing from Darwin University (1961). Among her academic appointments she has been Dean of the College of Indigenous Education and Research at Adelaide's University of South Australia and Dean of Indigenous Research and Education, a university wide position, at Charles Darwin University (formerly Northern Territory University), Darwin.
In 1989 she published her first book Aboriginal Tertiary Education in Australia, and in 2000 she edited and published through Queensland University Press Aboriginal Women by Degrees, telling the stories of 13 university-educated Aboriginal women.
