Some people are a little wary about recycling our packaging. It's understandable: after all, it looks just like plastic! The first time our Liandra team saw this new material we were a little apprehensive too. However, there is nothing to fear! We've been working with our manufacturer to ensure that this product is 100% compostable and can be recycled in anywhere in the world!
Made from plants, not plastic
You might be surprised to learn that plastic is made from petrochemicals, which are created from oil and natural gas. In fact, the majority of our packaging is made from these petrochemicals.
The root from the Cassava plant can be used to create a starch that can then be turned into a variety of products including polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is biodegradable and compostable—which means it doesn't pollute waterways or oceans when it's discarded!
A much lower carbon footprint
It's no secret that plastic packaging has a negative impact on the environment. The amount of plastic waste generated globally is increasing at an alarming rate, and studies show that it could outweigh all other forms of man-made debris found in landfills by 2050. In addition to these issues, many plastics take hundreds of years to decompose and harming aquatic life when they eventually break down into smaller pieces.
With this in mind we wanted to make a difference while doing our part for the environment by switching over to a sustainable cassava packaging solution instead. Our 100% compostable and recyclable csg-film bags are made from plants rather than petroleum products—meaning they're good for both you and Mother Earth!
Recyclable in every corner of the world!
We ship to such diverse range of places around the world and so it is important to us to make sure our packaging solutions are compostable and/or recyclable wherever it ends up! For example, Cassava root packaging is recyclable in:
- Australia
- United States
- Europe
- United Kingdom

It can break down in as little as 90 days (but usually less) and is much faster than traditional plastics that take over 400+ years to decompose in landfill conditions!
How do I dispose of it?
The other good news in all of this is that there is NO extra cost to dispose of your Liandra packaging at home because it is 100% compostable; just toss it in your backyard compost pile and voilà!
If you’re looking to get rid of your packaging, here are your options:
- Compost it - if you have a backyard or garden and want to use biodegradable products, composting is the easiest way to dispose of your Liandra packaging!!!
- Recycle it - if you live in an area with municipal recycling services available, look into whether or not the type of plastic used in food packaging (usually high-density polyethylene) is accepted for recycling there. If so, include your Liandra Swim packaging with your other plastics when it comes time for collection or drop off at a recycling facility nearby.
- Throw it away - if neither composting nor recycling works for you and/or where you live doesn't offer these services yet, simply throw out your Liandra Swim cassava packaging, your food waste and non-recyclables together as trash. This will help keep our landfills from filling up too quickly while still maintaining optimal levels of resource conservation throughout our communities!
