We are shining the spotlight on Marcia Ella-Duncan. Who our Marcia One Piece namesake! She is a pioneer of Netball in Australia and we love her tenacity and commitment.
Marcia started her netball career at 9 years old playing with La Perouse Netball Club. After making the decision to take netball further, she moved across to Randwick Rugby Netball Club (RRNC). At RRNC she represented the club in the under 12 team - which continued throughout her teens and early twenties. At 20 years old Marcia was invited to trial for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Netball Program. She became the first Aboriginal person to receive a scholarship into the AIS. Marcia then went onto become the first Aborignal person to represent Australia in Netball.
Marcia went on to play 18 Tests for Australia, after making her international debut against New Zealand in Christchurch in May 1986. Her career included winning a silver medal at the 1987 Netball World Cup in Glasgow, Scotland.
For all her ground-breaking work within the sport of Netball, Marcia has rightfully been inducted into the NSW and Australian Netball Hall of fame. In 1988 Marcia also recieved the Order of Australia Medal, for her services to netball!
